Organization Skills (and other school life survival tips..)

As a parent, have you met with your child's teacher and been told that he or she has Not been turning in their homework assignments on time or have assignments missing?  Are quiz and test grades dropping as they've entered middle school or high school?

It is not uncommon for children to have difficulty with the transition to middle school or high school. The changes in classroom life are monumental and some children do not instinctively have the ability to organize their time and adapt without help.

Having two children in high school I have witnessed how each initially struggled, and ultimately succeeded with school transitions that included changing school's as well as going from a small class size to a much larger class and school environment.  The transitions did not come easily, as each needed individualized help in areas that seemed at times overwhelming.

For the past ten years, Ms. Downing has worked with students in Grades 7 and up with tutoring that helped them develop critical organization skills.  If your child struggles with not turning in homework assignments, completing projects on time, preparing for tests and quizzes and the ability to set up their school pack-back and subject notebooks to be ready for each days classes, you should consider a program of weekly tutoring with Ms. Downing to help your child develop the organization skills to take back control of their day-to-day school life.

Ms. Downing will work one-on-one with your child in her studio or your home to teach your child how to master the art of being prepared and organized for school each day!

Following is a sample of what your child will learn and practice doing:

Use of homework planners.

How to set up notebooks for each subject and keep assignments organized.

Set up a permanent study work area that will include all of the tools necessary for them to complete homework.

They will learn how to brainstorm, visualize, map out what they need to do; safely research on-line resources.

Practice their writing skills and make homework 'legible..'

Test taking tips and strategies; as well as note taking skills.

How to take make sure they have what they need for class and care for those belongings.

We will talk about all the activities that make up their days and weeks and come up with an effective schedule for them to follow.

Ms Downing will work, one on one, with your child to develop a daily plan so your child can become independent, gain confidence and experience success.

Ms. Downing served as the Director of Admissions for a Boston area international school for five years. Additionally, having worked as an education school consultant, Ms. Downing is familiar with both private and pubic schools in the area, and can help you navigate the various school systems, so you and your child learn what on-line resources are available from their school:  from the basics of obtaining copies of weekly and monthly school calendars; investigating whether or not homework assignments may be posted on line; to on-line links to support each subject.  It is likely that their school offers resources for writing and math labs, as well a after school appointments with teachers for extra help.  It is not uncommon for a child or  parents to not be familiar with the many resources that schools offer to help students succeed.

If someone calls your child average... you can do something about it.
